The “Organic” certification takes several years of paperwork and inspections – so while we’ve begun maintaining all the necessary records, we won’t be officially certified organic for a while. In the meantime we’re glad to help other farms and certification agencies close loopholes so that when you buy agricultural products, what you’re actually getting matches your expectations.
We think so! A comparison can be made to wine-making; “terroir” is a term usually reserved for wine, referring to the characteristic taste and flavor imparted to wine by the way it was produced and the complete environment in which the grapes grew. Not all grass fed beef is created equal, though. Meat raised on a limited diet of one or two kinds of grass won’t taste the same as animals raised on a diverse polyculture of grasses, forbes, and clover. When you try our meats, just like our honey and other products, you know you’re getting the real flavor of where we live, from livestock who were always free to roam, treated humanely, and processed ethically.
Browntown is located ten miles south of Front Royal, VA. We’re located less than 75 miles from the Capitol in DC, and less than 100 miles from Baltimore or Richmond. Our farm is within a quick drive of Front Royal, Luray, Harrisonburg, or Wincester, Virginia – so if you live in and around these cities, we’re local. However, we also work with customers outside that radius to find delivery options that work for them, and to connect with local farms in your area, and you’ll get the same quality of service no matter where you live. And the same invitation: come visit us and see for yourself how we do business.
Orders within 75 miles of our farm are considered local and are hand delivered by appointment. If you live further away from our farm, we invite you to contact us about shipping options on a case by case basis.
Please do! It’s a working farm, so it’s best to call or email ahead of time so we can be sure someone is available to meet you and give you a tour. If you come by at the spur of the moment, please check in at the shop before exploring the farm. Thanks!
Most of our meat is vacuum-sealed and flash frozen to ensure freshness when delivered to our customers. By special order we can provide meat that is never frozen, but we find the flavor to be just as good either way.
All beef produced for sale in the United States must be slaughtered and processed by a federally inspected facility. After careful vetting, we use several local facilities who adhere to the highest standards of humane treatment of the animals they handle.
By special request we can meet the requirements of kosher and halal traditions at no additional cost. Please contact us to discuss your needs. It is our privilege to serve.
Yes! And you may have tried our steaks at some of your favorite local restaurants over the past six years! Our steaks sell out fast, so it’s best to contact us about a custom order to see if we can produce specialty cuts at that time, or swing by Manor Line Market on Main Street in Front Royal to place an order.

There are a lot of buzz words that fly around when you talk about beef. And there are lots of loopholes that allow people to mislead you about the quality of their meat. For example, “grass fed” usually conjures up images of happy, healthy cattle on rolling green hillsides, but did you know that corn is a grass? The same massive feedlots that force-feed corn to cattle and supply cheap meat to stores all over the country can market those animals as “grass-fed” without lying. So, if the list of buzz words we use to describe our beef seems a little long, we agree. We just want to make sure that you know what you’re getting, and that you’re getting what you expect.
So here’s our answer: come visit our farm. You’ll see healthy animals on rolling green hills; you’ll see how much work we’ve put into improving the type and variety of grasses in our pastures to give our animals all the nutrition they need; you’ll see animals growing healthily on fresh pasture or hay made from the same grasses we grow in those pastures; you’ll see how we don’t use any antibiotics or growth hormones to speed up the growth of our animals; you’ll see how we use mechanical control and rotational grazing to reduce weeds and improve our fields instead of using chemical herbicides. Anyone who is providing food to your family should be able to stand up to scrutiny of their practices and a careful examination of the quality of their products. So come visit us. You’ll see the difference.
